The production and interpretation of scientific and health information are essential for the proper functioning of today's civil society. Thus, responsible citizens should possess foundational skills to dissect and make sense of scientific and medical messages. This course adopts a socio-cultural perspective, integrating scholarship from Communication Studies, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Public Health to provide an overview of theories and methods related to health and medical practices in today's world. The course is designed to focus on four aspects of learning trajectories. Firstly, the course material covers theories of mediation, behavioral interventions, and message formations. Secondly, students will read classic STS and sociological projects, including Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor. Thirdly, the course invites media industry experts and non-governmental organizations practitioners to share their experiences with health and scientific translations and message production. Finally, in a three-week workshop, the course provides students with hands-on opportunities to produce tailored health-science messages for targeted audiences. Through an integrated approach and training, students will learn how to identify key socio-behavioral and community factors that affect the health of individuals and populations (HBCS-A) and identify individual, organizational, and community concerns and resources for multiple targets and levels of intervention for social and behavioral science programs (HBCS-C).

At the end of the course the students are expected to
1. Understand the key socio-behavioral and community factors that affect the health communication among individuals and targeted populations. (HBCS -A)
2. Understand fundamental concepts and perspectives in health communication and scientific translation. (HBCS -B)
3. Apply key concepts and methods to produce tailored messages for specific audiences. (HBCS -C)
(HBCS -A)
(HBCS -C)

說明
1.
Attendance
10%
To ensure a fair learning environment, the attendance will be evaluated based on NTU’s course regulations: e.g., lowering one letter grade if students miss three courses, two letter grade for missing four courses, and raked as X for missing five courses. Missing guest lecture will lead to lowering one letter grade.
2.
Participation
20%
To ensure effective learning, students need to actively participate in in-class discussion and/or visit the instructor during the office hours. During the guest lecture series, students will be evaluated by their interactions with the invited guests, ensuring that students ask questions and participate in the conversation in a positive and productive manner.
3.
In-Class Presentation
20%
Students will be partnered as groups, taking up three weeks to lead the discussion of the selective chapters from Dr. Golem: how to think about medicine. In this 30-min presentation, each group will introduce the content of assigned chapters, articulate them with the local Taiwanese or global cases, and design discussion questions.
4.
Media Project
20%
Each Student should identify one health-related topics and conduct a media survey, looking into how that specific health issue is framed across different media genre and reporting how media set up agenda in specific ways.
5.
Final Media Project
30%
Final project asks students, as groups or individuals, to select one journal article in public health and translate it into following genres: (1) a hard-news lead and a soft-news; (2) a post on Facebook or Twitter; (3) a post on Instagram; and (4) a series of memes to be circulated via LINE. Students need to provide a written rationale for each design, drawing on the literature introduced in the syllabus.
